NATURAL ROMAN SHADES INSTALLATION GUIDE
A. Getting Started
The Parts: Before getting started, please remove and identify the following parts required for the installation of your shades:
B. The Tools
To install your Great Windows Natural Roman Shades, you will need a few basic tools:
  • Phillips head screwdriver* or
  • 1/4" nut Driver*
*Power screwdriver or power drill with a #2 Phillips attachment or 1/4" nut driver attachment may be used.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Screws provided are for installation into wooden frames only. For metal surfaces, use suitable sheet metal screws and pre-drill holes. For concrete, stone, brick, or tile, use a carbide drill and appropriate anchors and screws. For wallboard or plaster, use hollow wall anchors and/or longer screws to reach framing or stud. In all cases, follow the fastener manufacturer's recommendations.
C. Sorting Your Shades
Inside the headrail of your Great Windows Natural Roman Shades, there is a sorting label. This appears as seen at right:

On this label, you will recognize:

  • Order size of the shade
  • Room location (If not present, info not given at time of order)
  • Whether the shade was ordered for inside mount (IB) or Outside mount (OB)

D. Installation
Inside Mount
  1. Place Shade inside window casement as shown (Figure 1)
  1. Hold headrail level against the top of the casement and lower shade to make sure that bottom rail is level. Shimming may be required to level shade for out of square window casements as shown (Figure 2)
  1. While holding headrail firmly against the casement, place screw through slot in the headrail and drill through to the window casement. If shim is required make sure it is in place before tightening the screw.
  1. Use the 1 1/2" inch wood screws to attach the shade to the window casement. If shim is used to level headrail, make sure that it is in place before tightening screws.
Outside Mount
  1. Place installation brackets on the edge of trim or wall (depending on how you measured the space that you want the shade to cover). Lightly mark the mounting surface for the position of the brackets. Please note, brackets will need to line up with the center of the slots in the headrail (Figure 3)
  1. Position brackets along the pencil marked designated area. Drill through the bracket and into the mounting surface (Figure 4). Repeat the same step on the other side after making sure brackets are level.
  1. Place headrail so that slots are positioned with threaded posts coming down through the slots (Figure 5)
  1. Secure the headrail to the installation brackets by tightening the wing nuts.

E. Shade Adjustment
Please note that our Natural Roman Shades are made from natural bamboo reeds, dowels, and grasses. These materials have natural biases and are not uniform throughout the shade. These imperfections lend to the beauty of these natural weaves. Bamboo has a tendency to change color and size as it ages and the process may accelerate when placed in windows with high exposures to sun.
Child Safety
At Great Windows child safety is first. All of our products are fitted with the highest quality components that provide the most complete safety measures in the industry. Our Natural Roman Shades for example, are made with individual cord tassels. This prevents any loop from forming that may be hazardous. Cord cleats are also available upon request.
Cleaning and Care
In order to keep your window treatments looking new, follow the recommended methods for care and maintenance. Regular care will result in better appearance and performance from your window coverings.
