| A. Getting Started |
| The Parts: Before getting started, please remove and identify the following parts required for the installation of your shutters: |
- shutter panels with hanging device attached
- self drilling anchors for secure mounting (into wood studs only)
- touch up paint (if needed)
| B. The Tools |
| To install your Great Windows Roller Shades, you will need a few basic tools: |
- pencil / steel measuring tape / electric drill / phillips screw driver / small hammer / level / square / DAP Caulking
| IMPORTANT NOTE: Screws provided are for installation into wooden frames only. For metal surfaces, use suitable sheet metal screws and pre-drill holes. For concrete, stone, brick, or tile, use a carbide drill and appropriate anchors and screws. For wallboard or plaster, use hollow wall anchors and/or longer screws to reach framing or stud. In all cases, follow the fastener manufacturer's recommendations. |
| C. Sorting Your Shades |
Inside the headrail of your Great Windows Plantation Shutters, there is a sorting label. This appears as seen below:
On this label, you will recognize:
- Order size of the shutter
- Room location (If not present, info not given at time of order)
- Whether the shutter was ordered for inside mount (IB) or Outside mount (OB)
| D. Layout of Frames and Panels |
| Inside Mount |
- Detach the panels from the side frame by removing the hinge pin from each hinge.
- Carefully lay the panels to the side ensuring original panel and frame pairing.
- Lay the frame pieces on the floor face down in order to attach the frame pieces together. (Place a towel on the floor under the frame to protect the shutter frame.)
| IMPORTANT NOTE: The shutter frame and mounting devices must be securely attached to the mounting surface. The mounting screws that are included in the package must hit wood studs. If there are no wood studs present, use a secure fastener. |
| E. Outside Mounting Your Shutters |
| Frame Assembly |
- Lay the frame pieces on the floor face down in order to attach the frame pieces together. Place all corners of the frame pieces together and insert the rounded end of the X shaped plastic key into the pre-routed hole in the back of each frame corner. Gently tap the plastic key into place with a hammer.
| Attaching the frame to the window |
| The mounting holes in the frame pieces are pre-drilled. Place the assembled frame around the window opening or space to be covered. Level and square the frame around the opening. With the frame held in this position, attach the frame to the wall or window trim using the mounting screws provided. In order to avoid damage to window casement, we recommend pre-drilling a 1/16" hole at each mounting hole location. |
| Adjusting the frame |
| Open and close the panel(s). The panel(s) should not touch the frame when opened and closed. There should be an even amount of space between the panels and the frame at the top as the bottom. |
| Attaching the top and bottom frame |
| With the shutter frame properly aligned and square, attach the frame to the wall or window casing with the long mounting screws provided. |
- Wallboard or plaster: Use a secure fastener designed for hollow wall applications.
- Metal: Pre-drill holes - use the included mounting screws.
- Concrete, stone or tile: Use a masonry drill and appropriate plugs, anchors or screws.
| When selecting a fastener, make sure it is designed to support the weight of the product being installed. Follow the fastener manufacturer instructions for proper installation of fastener. |
| F. Inside Mount Shutters with Hanging Strip |
| Remove the shutters from the package. The package will include the following: |
- dove tail keys for frame assembly
- the top and bottom frame pieces
| Layout of hanging strips and panels |
| Detach the panel(s) from the hanging strips removing the hinge pin from each hinge. Carefully lay the panel(s) to the side ensuring original panel and hanging strip pairing. |
| Attaching the hanging strips to the window |
| The mounting holes in the hanging strips are pre-drilled. Place the hanging strip inside the window opening making it flush with the window molding. Level the hanging strip in the opening. With the hanging strip held in position, attach the hanging strip to the window casing using the mounting screws provided. In order to avoid damage to window casement, we recommend pre-drilling a 1/16" hole at each mounting hole location. |
| Adjusting the panels and hanging strip |
| Open and close the panel(s). The panel(s) should not touch the frame when opened and closed. On a two-panel set, the panels should be even at the top and bottom. If adjustment is needed, use the adjustment slot on the inside of the hanging strip to align the panels. |
| G. Touchup Paint |
| Great Windows provides a bottle of touchup paint or stain with your shutter order. This can be used to cover scratches or nicks that may occur during installation or over normal wear and tear. For safety reasons, always perform the touchup in a well-ventilated area. |
| H. Troubleshooting |
| The panels rub against the top or bottom of the frame pieces |
| The most common cause of this problem is the mounting of the frame. Verify with a square and level that all the sides of the frame are mounted squarely. For three-sided frames, check the top and sides. If not square, make the necessary adjustments and recheck the panels. |
| The shutter panel(s) will not stay closed |
| Make sure the magnets on the back of the panel are engaging the metal strike plate. |
| Care and Cleaning |
| Minimal care and cleaning is needed to maintain the beauty of your shutters. |
| Vacuum: Use a soft brush attachment. |
| To dust: Use a soft clean cloth |
| Do not use water or any type of cleaning agent on your shutters. The finish on your shutters is sensitive to water and solvents in household cleaning products. |
