Inside Mount
  1. If you are selecting inside mount (mounting on the inside of the window frame), be certain there is enough depth for inside mounting.

Inside Mount
Measure size of opening in which blind is being mounted
  1. Measure size of exact window frame opening (area where blind is mounting); do not take any allowances. Measure the width first, and then the height. The factory will take all allowances for clearance.
  1. Measure width of opening in three places, to the nearest 1/8th inch. Provide the narrowest measurement when placing your order. (Window may not be square.)
  1. Determine what type of window you have (sash, casement, etc.). If you have a casement window (window cranks, locks, and screens on the inside), consider outside mounting (on trim) to avoid interference with screens, locks, and crank handles. If inside mount is still desired, take extra precaution to make certain consideration is given to locks, screens, and crank handles. Inside mount is ideal for sash (double hung) windows provided there is enough depth.
  1. If you are selecting inside mount for your sash (double hung) windows, make certain window track is not considered when checking depth. Blinds should never be mounted in tracks.
  1. If you don't have enough depth for inside mounting, measure your windows for outside mount.
Outside Mount
  1. If you have a standard beveled 2-1/4" inch trim, or 3-1/2" inch trim, you have the option of measuring for the first tier on the trim, or to the edge of the trim (edge of trim is recommended for 2 1/4"; first tier is recommended for 3-1/2.")
  1. If measuring to the edge of the trim, measure from edge to edge across the top for the width, and from the top of the upper trim to the sill (or bottom of lower trim) for the height.
  1. If measuring in the first tier, measure from the outer edge of the first tier on one side to the outer edge of the first tier on the other side for the width, and from the upper edge of the first tier on top to the sill (or lower edge of the first tier on the bottom) for the height. Special measuring applications may arise that are not covered in these instructions. Please consult your Great Windows customer service representative for additional assistance.
  1. If measuring for a door, we recommend measuring the glass and adding 2" to the height. For the width, measure the glass and add 1". Please take into consideration hinges, knots, handles, etc.

Outside Mount
For width, measure from outer edge of trim at left to outer edge of trim on right. For height, measure from top of upper trim to sill (or to bottom of lower trim if there is no sill)

First Tier Outside Mount
For width, measure from outer edge of innermost flat surface on left to same on right. For length, measure from top edge of innermost flat surface to sill.
Roller Shades
We'd Like You To Know ...
Roller shades are trimmed 1-3/8'' narrower than the width you order, a process that ensures smooth operation but creates a small light gap. For this reason we strongly recommend a full outside mount.
